Mutare Polytechnic’s senior management and heads of all academic departments recently held a weeklong workshop at Mutare Polytechnic towards the certification of ISO 9001of 2008 Quality Management System.

The main objective of the workshop was to familiarise the senior management and heads of departments on the process and requirements needed for one organisation to the certified.

In his opening remarks on the first day of the workshop, the Principal, Mr. T.M. Kuwengwa indicated that the institution entered a new phase when they decided to seek certification with SAZ on ISO 9001 of 2008 and certification does not come easily. “There are several stages that we need to go through in the certification process. There are lists of requirements that we have to meet before certified.” he said.

“It can be a long road, but one that is worthwhile, he said, adding that Mutare Polytechnic, which became the first polytechnic in Africa to be accredited  with International Accreditation organisation (IAO),will be certified.

The Head of Division, Mr. Thoko Kandekande added that the first stages opened up the management’s minds on some issues that were taken for granted. He said “The first stage of towards certification opened up the people’s minds and revealed that some areas need to be addressed seriously so as to contribute to quality management.”

Mr. Tonderai S. Chawonza echoed the same sentiments. “Seeking ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management is very beneficial to the institution as it will go a long way in improving the way the institution operates and it may contribute towards production of better results.”  He said.

This introductory stage marks the beginning of the journey to certification for Mutare Polytechnic.
